June 12: Black Canyon in Gunnison CO

June 12, 2013

We had our quickest “pack-up/ getaway” this morning.  We rolled out of bed by 8:20, got up, dressed, fed, packed up and pulled out of the park by 9:45.  Todd said that he suggests you stay at Heron’s Nest only if you happened to be in Silt, Colorado, are pulling a camper, and need an emergency place to stay over night. Even then there is a great holiday express off of the same exit.  J  I didn’t think it was too horrible, I think we’ve stayed in worse places but it wasn’t my favorite.

The drive from Silt to Black Canyon State Park in Gunnison was about 3hrs.  We made a couple stops for snacks, gas, ice and potty breaks.  Our site at Black Canyon is really nice and the weather is beautiful.  While we appreciate the sunny days in Colorado, the overcast days are so welcome!

Setting up is getting faster as well.  We were set up and back in the truck to explore within an hr.

Then we headed out to see the canyon from the top and the bottom and it was magnificent! We stopped at the gift shop, purchased a sticker for the camper, a postcard and signed the guest book.

Thirsty boy, licking the water fountain. ;)

Since we snacked on the car on the way to the park, we skipped lunch and made an early dinner of hamburgers and hashbrown cubes. Oh so yummy!

After dinner we relaxed at the campsite and enjoyed the break from the harsh sun.  A couple mule deer ran through our campsite while we lounged in our zero gravity chairs (a gift from mom) and River played with his toys, he even got about 10 min of Mikey Mouse in.

About 8PM we got bored and ran into town for some cell service and a Tasty Freeze treat.
